Transportation Schedules
The Carmel Central School District maintains and operates a fleet of 103 buses, which includes (59) 66 passenger buses, (14) 30 passenger buses, 30 various sized vehicles including vans and passenger wheelchair buses. The fleet also includes busses purchased from 1986 to 2007 of which 95% are diesel-powered. Each year, the fleet logs more than 1.500,000 miles. For the 2008-09 school year, the district will transport children to over 61 different instructional facilities daily. This includes 5 local public schools and 56 BOCES or nonpublic programs. State law requires that districts transport students to nonpublic schools which are a maximum of 15 miles from their residence. Transportation is vital the operation of the school district. Over 5,000 public and non-public school students are transported daily to and from school. The Board of Education policy on transportation states that 'it shall be provided to resident students who live at least 0.7 miles from the school they attend or 0.7 miles from a regular bus stop, to a maximum of 15 miles.
Safety is Our First Priority
Because your child's safety is our business, it is essential that students behave appropriately while riding the school bus. Any student whose conduct is unacceptable may be suspended from school transportation. Under New York State education law, if a child is permanently suspended from school transportation, it becomes the parent or guardian's responsibility to transport the child to and from school.
Objects Prohibited
DO NOT bring the following items on the bus; glass objects, bats, batons, metal bars, slingshots, large toys, camping equipment, motorbike helmets, clothes hangers, umbrellas, pets, guns and large musical instruments. Also prohibited are construction materials such as bricks, boards, boxes, and pointed objects such as knives, darts, arrows and screwdrivers. Balls may be brought on the bus if kept in a bag.
Bus Identification System
Specific numbers identifies routes. The route number will be displayed on a card located on the windshield of the bus. (The number of the bus is no longer used for identification.) Please be sure your child is aware of this route identification system. Transportation Requests Requests for childcare transportation and transportation to private schools must be made in writing by April 1. If the parent or guardian of a child does not live in the district on April 1, he/she must submit a written request within 30 days after establishing residence in the district. Requests made after April 1 may be granted, subject to available space, provided that granting the request would not add to transportation costs. The childcare facility and/or private school must be within the school district and within the attendance area of the school the child will attend. Transportation must be from the same location each morning and back to the same location each afternoon. Transportation to and from different locations, depending on the day of the week, cannot be permitted. Private School Transportation Requests for transportation to private and parochial schools must be made to our transportation office in writing by April 1 of each year. If a request is made after April 1, the district consider the request and will provide the transportation only if it can be done at no additional cost to the district.
A Note to Kindergarten Parents
As newcomers to school, kindergarten children need to know the rules of riding the bus. Please take the time to explain school bus safety rules to your child, and escort him/her to the school bus stop, at least for the first few days, so that together, we can ensure the safety of your child. Parent Reminders
· Review the bus safety and conduct rules with your child and be sure that he/she understands them. Call the transportation office at 225-3200 if you have any questions.
· Drive defensively.
· Never pass a stopped school bus with its flashing red lights on.
· Students must board their assigned bus at the designated bus stop. Students will be returned to their designated bus stop at the end of the school day.
· Requests to ride a bus other that the one assigned, will be considered only in extreme need. Transportation WILL NOT be provided to birthday or slumber parties, visits to friends, scout meetings, doctors, dentists, dance or other non-school-related activities.
· Once a student has boarded the school bus, the driver is authorized to discharge him/her only at the school site or at the student's designated bus stop.
· A school bus driver is not authorized to release a student to anyone, including a parent, unless authorized to do so by the principal or his/her designee.
· Your child must arrive at his /her stop five minutes before the bus is due. Remind your child to practice good citizenship and to respect the property of others while waiting to board or depart from the school bus. Proper behavior at the bus stoop is of the utmost importance.
· Transportation requests for childcare purposes must be made in writing by April 1 of the preceding year. Only one pickup and one drop-off point can be requested. This means that the district cannot provide transportation to a childcare location three days a week and to home the remaining days.
· School Bus Safety and Conduct · Please be sure your child is aware of his/her responsibility as a safe rider by understanding and following the school bus safety rules. Any student who does not obey these rules could lose the privilege of riding the bus. Parents will be notified of repeated or serious school bus misconduct.
· Wait for your bus well off the roadway and respect the property of others.
· Follow instructions of your driver
· Enter the bus in a single file and in an orderly manner
· Remain in your seat while bus is in motion
· Keep aisles clear at all times. Remain quiet and orderly
· Stop, look, and listen at all railroad crossings with the driver
· Be courteous to your driver and fellow passengers. No fighting, yelling, or throwing of objects is allowed. Bad language or rude behavior will not be tolerated. No smoking, eating or drinking is allowed on the bus. Help keep your bus neat and clean.
· Do not open the windows without permission. When allowed to open windows, do not extend head, hands, arms, or any object out of the window.
· When leaving the bus, if you have to cross, ALWAYS CROSS IN FRONT OF THE BUS. Walk out far enough so you can see the bus driver through the windshield; wait for the driver to signal you to cross, and then proceed to cross.
· NEVER ATTEMPT TO RETURN TO THE BUS ONCE YOU LEAVE, UNLESS INSTRUCTED BY THE DRIVER.
· Any student who damages or destroys any part of the bus will be held responsible for the cost of the repair or replacement. |
