FAIRY TALE MAIL DELIVERS IMPORTANT LESSONS
Where in the world would you find Red Hen Lane, Woods Way, NY? Or Swallow’s End, Birdville, NY? Or Ladybug Lane, Critter Corner, NY? Believe it or not, these are real places
and they are all addresses for the Fairy Tale Mail system here at Kent
Primary School. Also known as Wee
Deliver Post Office, this program teaches children concepts and skills from
real life examples.
Implemented several years ago under the guidance of the U.S. Post Office, Wee
Deliver operates each January through May and is very popular among students,
parents, and staff. This is an authentic
opportunity for youngsters to write meaningful messages to each other and to
favorite adults here at KPS. Second
grade children benefit from the post office by having the chance to be
employed as the Postmaster, mail sorters, or letter carriers. Each second grade student takes a “postal
exam” to determine eligibility.
Students who work in the post office experience first hand exactly how
the post office works and what job responsibility means.
Letters are mailed in the official collection receptacle donated by the U.S.
Post Office, located in the school lobby.
From there, the mail is sorted and delivered two or three times
weekly. Each time we open the
collection box; there are about 80 pieces of mail to be delivered. The
student Postmaster, who must take an oath of office before performing his/her
duties, oversees the sorting and delivering of mail. The sorters put the mail into the proper
metal sorting boxes and the letter carriers are responsible for delivering
the mail to each classroom. This is a
wonderful program that places children in real life situations and promotes
academics, maturity, and responsibility.
