The Carmel Central School District participates in the National School Lunch Program. The NSLP is federally funded and provides nutritionally balanced, low cost lunches to children each school day. What are the nutritional requirements for school lunches? School lunches must meet the applicable recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommend that no more than 30 percent of an individual's calories come from fat, and less than 10 percent from saturated fat. |
Regulations also establish a standard for school lunches to provide one-third of the Recommended Daily Allowances of protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, calcium and calories.
School lunches must meet Federal nutrition requirements, but decisions about what specific foods to serve and how they are prepared are made by local school food authorities. |

Any child may purchase a meal (Breakfast or Lunch) through this program. Children from families with incomes below 185% of poverty are eligible for free or reduced priced meals. Please file an application (found in the CCSD District Calendar) with the Director of Food Services. Please call (845) 878-2094 x254 with additional questions concerning this program.
By law, the NSLP must be self supporting. The food service department at CCSD operates its own budget independent of the CCSD general budget. The revenue generated from meal sales and the reimbursement for meals sold from the federal and state "fund" the food service program. All expenses, such as food and supply purchases, salaries, benefits, equipment purchases and repairs for the food service program are paid by meal sales. |
Child Nutrition and Wellness Committee - Mary Jo Mueller, Director of Food Services, is an active member of the district Child Nutrition and Wellness Committee (CNWC). Mrs. Mueller has been proactive in introducing the "Choose Sensibly" snack program as well as introducing fruits, vegetables, low-fat milk and whole grains into the meal pattern. |

The CNWC welcomes your input. Please feel free to join the committee or contact one of the members with suggestions.
Thank you for your continued support. |
