ABOUT SUMMER READING!

YOUR ESSAYS FOR SUMMER READING WILL BE DUE BY THE BEGINNING OF THE THIRD WEEK OF SCHOOL.  THAT DATE IS ON SEPTEMBER 16TH—IT’S A TUESDAY FOR YOU WEEKEND WARRIORS!

Text Box: Welcome Back Students!!

Dear 1st and 4th Period,

I am looking forward to meeting each and every one of you.  Teaching is my passion.   I hope that you will approach English Lit and Comp with enthusiasm, a determination to work hard, a desire to improve and  sincerity about your education.  Many students can fake getting their work done.  They can read book notes, copy sections of papers off the internet, paraphrase other people’s work. But if you think about it, the only person who is really being fooled is the cheater.  That individual isn’t getting an education.  That person isn’t getting the practice  that he or she needs to improve his or her reading of difficult works of literature and communicating his/her understanding of those works in writing.  A lack of commitment to the course always shows when the test results come in!

This class isn't just about an AP exam, though.  It is about gaining experience for college level classes, learning to appreciate literature, becoming an expert reader and writer, appreciating poetry, (Yes, most of my students like poetry by the time they finish the class, even those who profess to hate it at the beginning!) and connecting to a world of culture that is profound.  Besides all this, English Lit and Comp happens to be EXCITING and FUN.  I know because I do it every day each school year, and I love it.  I look forward to coming to school each day.  My students don’t love everything we do in class, because some of the work is challenging and frustrating; however, much of the work is rewarding, entertaining and often funny.  You won’t be disappointed.
