TESTING ACCOMODATIONS

FOR

LEP (Limited English Proficient) STUDENTS

 

 

ALL STATE TESTS -- GRADES 3-12

 

  • Time Extension – Any reasonable extensions, such as “time-and-a-half” in accordance with the needs of the LEP student

 

  • Separate Location – Administration of tests to LEP either individually or in small groups in a separate location to provide optimal testing environment

 

ALL STATE TESTS EXCEPT LOTE (Language other than English) REGENTS

 

  • Bilingual Glossaries or Dictionaries – Permitted use of bilingual glossaries or dictionaries that provide only direct translations of words and not definitions or explanations.  (School should provide, if possible, acceptable dictionaries or at least verify student’s book.)

 

GRADES 3-8 ELA TESTS AND ENGLISH REGENTS

 

  • Third Reading of Listening Selection -- Listening passages read a third time

 

ALL TESTS OTHER THAN  ELA, ENGLISH & LOTE REGENTS

(e.g. Math, Science, Social Studies)

 

  • Simultaneous Use of English and Alternative Language Editions – Alternative language editions are available in several languages and maybe be used simultaneously with English edition, but responses should be recorded in only one of the editions. 

 

  • Oral Translations – Direct, oral translation of test may be made when there is no translated edition provided.  No clarifications or explanations can be provided. 

 

  • Writing Responses in Native Language – If using alternative language edition or oral translations, responses may be written to open-ended questions in native language.  School is responsible for reading and scoring responses. 

 

All accommodations should be coordinated through the school principal, classroom teacher, ESL teacher and any assigned Special Education teacher, according to the needs and for the maximum benefit of the LEP student.  Accommodations must also be noted on the student’s answer sheet.
